Perhaps if the price was high enough, we would be willing to do meaningless work that accomplished nothing, week after week, but those I've spoken to have realized they really do find meaning in giving real help, no matter how frustrated we may be with our pay, or how distant we feel from the doctors and the patients we serve.

It was 1982 when I read an ad in the newspaper for an entry-level medical transciptionist at Toledo Hospital. I took a test in the medical records department and passed. For the first few months I spent the mornings in a tiny room with a video teaching me transcription (I have no idea if the name the course had a name or if it had been put together by the hospital), and the afternoons transcribing with another MT assigned to help me "hear" the words. I took the lessons home and studied all evening. When I finished this self-taught course, I worked full time in medical records.

We had some samples of operations by doctors who said the same thing every time, but only had one dictionary and one syllabus for all of us. A book fair in a back hallway outside medical records was the source of my first two word books, The Medical Word Book by Sloan and The Surgical Word Book by Tessier. I still have the word books and the lessons.

A medical records department is a very good place to learn to be an MT. One year later I was offered a job in the oncology center and spent 12 years there.

I met my husband, Bror, in 1985 and we were married five weeks later. In 1994 he was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, my hours were changed from days to a strange shift of noon to 8:30 p.m., and after only a two-week family leave to take care of Bror after his surgery, I had to go back to work, leaving him unattended except for a wonderful neighbor who looked in on him once a day. Within a year, my husband was totally disabled, two hospitals merged, and I was down-sized out of a job.

I took the severance pay, prayed unceasingly, and we made sound financial decisions. I knew I needed to be at home to care for my husband and knew he dreaded the time I spent away from him. That is when and why Westside Confidential Transcription Service was born. Even though I had to work, I had a responsibility to be there for my husband.

I rearranged an area in our basement, set up the equipment I'd bought with my severance pay and some savings, and set about putting my ducks in a row. I had to define what I wanted the business to be and what services I would offer, decide what form the advertising would take and what business forms I could design myself to save money, and continue to read everything I could find on home-based businesses before I could accept my first assignment. It took three months of 8-hour days, but everything was finally in place.

My first client wanted forms designed, a one-time assignment. My old boss hired me back per diem, for a short time. Then I got a clinic account. The first year was not a howling success, but by the third year, I was self-supporting and was still able to be here for my husband when he needed me.

When I first began this business, there were things I just couldn't find in books. As they occurred and I found solutions, I wrote them down. When I had a seven-month drought last year (my most prolific client moved out of my service area), I took the downtime to put everything together into a book about the nuts and bolts of the business. The everyday things that most books don't have room to list. I still kept on advertising (direct mail) to local physician offices and didn't understand why I couldn't find a new client to add to the two I still had.

Just weeks after the book was finished, I got another client. Not as prolific as the one that moved away, but the next client that came on board a few weeks later was as prolific so now I had more than before the client moved. I don't pretend to know what God has in store for me, but it seemed as though He waited until the book was finished before he gave me the clients I needed. I don't understand it, I just accept it with deep gratitude.

I now have four offices as clients and have as much work as I can handle alone. I prefer not to have subcontractors so will stay a solo practice that continues to make a good living with doctors who still dictate on tapes and are grateful for an excellent work product and free pickup and delivery at a fair price.

My husband found MT Daily for me before I was on the Internet, and it was my desire to visit every day that finally encouraged me to allow my son to put Windows on my old 486. I have learned so much from those who post on MT Daily, that I feel it important to return whatever knowledge I have that might help someone else.
