INTRODUCING YVETTE SWEET
http://www.mtdaily.com/sweetcrafts.html
gabby-hayes@msn.com

It was completely by accident that I fell upon medical transcription. My husband and I transferred to Delaware from a VA Hospital in New York. He had a position lined up and we came down to Delaware so he could go for the interview. I had applied but they had no openings for me.

He got the job and we decided to transfer down anyway and I could get some kind of job somewhere. It just happened that the manager who interviewed my husband had a position for a temporary secretary. I worked in that job for a few months and then started bidding out to other things as the positions opened in the hospital. I had no idea what MT stood for or what they did but there was an opening in what they called the secretarial pool, and I got it.

I had been a medical secretary for awhile but never knew what an MT did. But on this job I got hands-on, on-the-job training. I stayed with it for seven years at that hospital, and have been working as an MT ever since. Who says being in the right place at the right time doesn't happen?

My first learning as an MT was quite frustrating. Even though I had been a medical secretary and receptionist in doctors' offices before and I had the computer skills and typing speed, this was something that I thought might be beyond my capabilities. All the medications, all the specialties, all the instruments for surgery, and the ESL doctors, and there were a ton of them practicing at the VA hospital!

In 1978, we did the transcribing off of minicassettes, typing on IBM selectric typewriters, using carbon paper to make our copies. The job was a challenge and I was determined that I was going to take advantage of the opportunity and learn to be a good MT, but those first years were often frustrating to me. I had taken a medical terminology course at the VA we transferred from in New York so I knew a little about anatomy, but nothing prepared me for this.

After the VA hospital, I went to an outpatient center and transcribed office notes. I have also worked in doctors' offices, a clinic, and a few other hospital positions. Sometimes I think that since doctors are specialists now, maybe one day transcriptionists will do the same. If that day ever comes, mine would be orthopedics. I love it!

It has been an extreme challenge for me, but now with 22 years of experience under my belt I definitely would do it all over again. I think medical transcription has finally come into its own; before we were often called typists and we worked in the typing pool. I think we are finally being recognized for the skills we possess. Now the doctors thank us at the end of the dictation, not treating the process as just a machine but as a human being at the other end of the tape. I have had a very gratifiying experience being an MT and I would tell anyone new starting out not to get frustrated or give up. It takes a while but you won't regret your decision. I am proud to be an MT.

I always was a kind of handy person when I was small. My mother gave me a subscription to "The Workbasket" which was a very small craft booklet. I always watched my mother sewing, knitting, and crocheting, and my father working with wood. I admired their efforts so much but never really got into it until my next-door neighbor introduced me to plastic canvas crafting. I loved it so much!

I then tried different things, but it wasn't until my mother died and I inherited her sewing machine that I really started to branch out, even taking courses in floral designing to work part time in a flower shop, my favorite craft of all. My mother always wanted me to sew but I never could seem to get the knack of it. How I wish she could see me now with that sewing machine humming away. I know she would be proud of me!

MT DAILY SPRING CLEANING

SCAM: The bad news is that the email directory on MT Daily was one place this week's scammers picked up email addresses. The good news is that we are going to protect the privacy of the email directory from the automatic website spiders by using a public username and password for access. See http://www.mtdaily.com/mtlist.

CYBERQUAKES: The bad news is that the Main Word Board broke down a few times this week. Please use the Stat Word Board as a main word board as well, so that our traffic can be spread out a bit and still get an answer in a few minutes. The good news is that html code will no longer work in the title of the notes, and this will protect from further interruptions. Special thanks to our expert programmers!

SPEED: The bad news is that we were given some brand conditions for some banner ads that we didn't like. The good news is that there are now fewer banners and the loading speed has increased. Consequently our traffic has increased to 15,500 user visits per day. Any time during the day, there are over 100 people on the website. Our traffic is equal to the 10th largest women's website.

JOBS: The bad news is that the IRS has not yet given us final approval for nonprofit status for mtdaily.org, so we continue to wait, but we are eager to help more MTs get started, come home to work, or retrain. Keep watching. The good news is that people are finding better accounts through mtjobs.com and networking with other MTs.

MONITORING: The bad news is that some folks still violate the guidelines of courtesy on the boards. We have found that the most effective way to deal with rude and offensive posts is not to post any response at all. The good news is that you can write us email to check any note. We appreciate the email alerts since there are only about 15 monitors for over 1,000 posts per day now. Kindness and courtesy are the keys to our expanding networking community. It is an honor to provide a place where...all of us are smarter than one of us!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

We celebrated last weekend when we went to hear Ronan Tynan, an Irish tenor and a para-Olympian, here in Park City. What a treat! One of my great-grandmothers came to the U.S. during the potato famine in Ireland, and I am 1/4 Irish, something I didn't really realize until my red-haired son David was born. He even went on to Notre Dame and made us proud!

Like many of you, our family is facing some medical diagnostic challenges these days, and we are learning about the healthcare establishment from a new perspective. We are finding that the best doctors are the hardest to get to, and it takes persistence, initiative, and patience to keep from being lost to followup: Our referrals sat on a desk for a week with no action. We were told there was a 4-month waiting list for one test. Another specialist had no appointments open until August. Second opinions differ on reading an MRI. A tester doesn't want to tell us detailed results.

We've decided that everyone should consider themselves their own primary care provider, watching for ways to bring the best out of physicians, nurses, and most importantly sometimes, administrators and receptionists. It takes overcoming vulnerable feelings and being a strong but rational patient advocate for yourself or your family.

This is giving us a poignant awareness of the challenging overload ahead for every aspect of the medical field, including medical records, as the elderly population increases. I'm persuaded we are going to need more medical transcriptionists. We always ask for copies of records and tests; it's our way of saying, "Medical records are valuable, and they belong to us too." And it's a tremendous protection that they know we can understand them, and we've already done our research on the Internet so we have few questions. We thank them for their services, but we hold them accountable too.

Being a part of a caring online networking community is benefiting our family greatly, and we are grateful. Needy and weak as we humans may be, we are "bound in the bundle of the living," a phrase used by Abigail when she boldly approached King David to fight for her life. (I Samuel 25, a great story) May you be bound in the bundle of the living this weekend!

IN MEMORY OF ROBIN FERLES

On Wednesday morning, we received the sad news that one of our regulars, Robin a.k.a. City Girl, had passed away on Monday, March 19, 2001. Robin was a lively and supportive presence on many of the MTDaily boards, public and private. We will all miss her and feel her absence. Below are some links and an excerpt from email, thoughts and remembrances of Robin. If you’d like to contribute more, please add your contributions to the tribute posted at http://www.mtdaily.com/cgibin/mboard?board=/mb/tears

She was an MT, a mentor, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend, and a “cheerleader” to the discouraged. We hope to share both the tributes and the remembrances with her family at some point. One common theme in all of Robin’s posts was her commitment to her marriage and her deep love for her two sons. Please join us in praying for her family.

Email excerpt from a grieving friend: I am grieved about Robin, as you know. I have not felt the same since hearing the news and have been quite miserable. I read many of the posts on Padded Cell. They were hard to read, and reading a few of Robin's past e-mails and posts was really tough to do today.

But somehow, in that process today, just realizing that I am not the only person hurting has made a huge, huge difference to me. Seeing others react much as I did: What about those poor kids, how tragic and sudden, or "I just talked to her yesterday," etc.; those kinds of reactions that were similar to mine, has helped me realize that others felt this range of concerns as well. Having other people share their reactions and sadness really does make you realize you are not alone, of course, but for me this is the first time I have ever experienced a really big difference in how I felt (in terms of the physical heartache and empty feeling) based on that sharing.

I have lost my very special mother-in-law, a dear grandmother who lived with us, and so on, and I knew other people were sad along with me those times, but somehow, with this board, having people put their feelings to words has made a big difference. I think it must be because the feelings are in writing and there for the sharing. At funerals everybody hugs and things, but it is so hard to actually talk in that setting and say what is in your heart, so most of us, I bet, just express the minimum. I recall with most funerals and such, my overall feeling was just wanting to get through it without falling apart, and so a lot of what was shared in that setting was hard to take, especially when you are just trying to hold it together. With reading what others have had to say on the boards, and realizing others have touched lives with Robin and also noted her sharing qualities as much as I did, it has made a big difference in how I feel personally with the grief. Now it is not just me who lost a good friend, but all of us, and all of us noticed much the same qualities. Somehow that increases my confidence that she is in heaven, as she was much loved.

It is just a simple discovery, but somehow very new to me, so I wanted to share that. I think it is useful to know anything that helps with dealing with grief. I knew of many things, but this particular mode of coping was new to me. As a nurse, and having always been interested in how people cope with the dying and/or grieving process, I am glad to see one more way that is helpful. Of course, prayer and faith and trusting God are the most important and necessary.

TIP OF THE WEEK

I've discovered a solution to one of the message board software bugs that has been plaguing some of us lately. Many of us have noticed that posts sometimes spring to the top of the board when they are meant to be notes posted in response to a current thread. We soon discovered that this happens when you leave the name, subject, or message data box empty. The system then kindly provides you with a fresh page and points out your error. Unfortunately, the system, kind as it is, is not bright enough (yet) to then post that info to the thread but instead, bounces it to the top of the page. My suggestion? Ignore that nice helpful second chance, hit the back button to add the info, and then hit submit. Bow your head, pray fervently, and hit the board link. You should find that your note posts to the right place. Happy editing! LP
