SEARCHES, SURVEYS, AND FIRETALK
Lora has programmed 18 new search engines limited to specific boards on MT Daily. Watch for the new search box at the top of the posting form on different boards. Almost all the boards are in the new format now for more efficient page loading and posting at the top. We are still working out the Java script errors, so let us know if you get error messages.
Brenda Hurley is preparing for a presentation in April to MTSOs. See http://www.mysticrealm.com/surveyof.html for a survey to complete and send to her.
About 10 unemployed MTs and new grads responded to the survey in last week's newsletter. See http://www.mtdaily.com/mentors/lifeboats
Thanks to the MT who told us about Firetalk this week. We have a Word Board channel and an MT Daily channel located at http://www.mtdaily.com/watercooler.html. It requires a microphone and speakers but Firetalk registration is free. Lots of potential for helping each other and mentoring online while working.

INTRODUCING JUDY HOBBY, MT
hobbyj@voyager.net
The turning point in all this was when the frozen food factory went out of business and I had to make a decision of what to do for the rest of my life. I decided that if I was ever going to get a college degree, this was the time. My kids were older and my husband was disabled so he was home with them. I got up the morning after I made this decision and drove to Muskegon and registered for classes at Baker College.
I started out in data processing because I am fascinated by computers, and then switched to a medical assistant program. When it came time to learn how to draw blood and various other things with needles, I decided that wasn't for me. I switched to the medical records program and became interested in the transcription portion of the program. The rest, as they say, is history. While doing my externship at Mercy Hospital, I worked a full day on transcription and knew that was what I wanted to do.
I was receiving "For the Record", and I faithfully watched the ads for something close by. Mercy Hospital put an ad in shortly before I was due to graduate in June of 1991. I quickly took my resume and a cover letter in to them and waited to hear from them. It was about a week later that I was called for an interview and a typing test. I didn't hear for them for several weeks so I called and talked to the director. She said she was waiting for me to contact her and let her know I was still interested and had graduated from college! I started working there 11 days after graduation and have been there ever since.
It will be nine years June 18th that I started my career as an MT. Of course, there have been ups and downs, but for the most part I have enjoyed it very much. I still learn new things every day, and I believe that if we are not actively learning all the time we are not living up to our potential. In these last nine years I have gone from being trained to being the trainer. I now work exclusively in our radiology department and am considered by most as the informal team leader; I am the one others come to for help. I still miss typing the pathology and operative notes that I used to do, but the atmosphere where I am now is more conducive for work and I am very glad I made that move two years ago.
My husband is still disabled and is receiving Social Security Disability now. He putters around the house and does most of the house work when he feels up to it. He has bilateral tendinitis and has a spondylolisthesis in his back. I probably contribute a little more than half our household income but I don't mind. I started working in December as a cashier part time for a Hobby Lobby craft store that just opened in our area. I enjoy the interaction with the public that I don't always get as an MT but it would take an awful good offer to make me give up my MT job!
Our daughter graduated from high school 5 years ago. She was living on her own but has just recently moved back home. She works full time on third shift so we don't see much of her. We helped her buy her first car this past weekend and she is really excited by it. My son graduated in 1997 and has been working since he was 16 as a welder.
We also share our home with a 2-year-old female daschund named Lady and my daughter's two cats, Woodson and Tinker. Lady has no problem with the cats but Woodson isn't sure he likes her. He has never been around a dog before. We have some outside cats that Lady plays with so she doesn't quite understand what the problem is. Some of my favorite hobbies are reading, sewing, plastic canvas, crocheting, and, of course, surfing the net.

A Quality Team for MTs
********************************************************************
THE STRONG AND THE WEAK IN THE ONLINE MT COMMUNITY
My desire on MT Daily has been to give room for everyone to feel safe to express themselves, within the guidelines for a healthy community. The monitoring, facilitating, welcoming, including, encouraging, and protecting of boundaries we provide are for the purpose of everyone networking together, the strong giving and the weak receiving.
During college, I read a book by a French psychiatrist, Paul Tournier. He believed that in Western culture, the people who were considered strong were the intelligent and rational who hide their defects and make the most of their resources. They are able to risk, defend themselves, stand on convictions, express anger, and argue. They are funny, confident, and cheerful. He believed the weak were the intuitive, artistic, sensitive, conscientious, private, and emotional, who are easily intimidated. They tend to isolate themselves, feel inhibited and slow, and easily despair.
I believe the health of a community can be assessed by the quality of the leaders who emerge and the sense of safety among those who are hurting. The true strength of a community is in everyone being free to speak and act on their convictions and express their own potentials, whether they need their pride broken, or whether they need courage; whether they are simple or complex, whether they are stubborn or submissive. The strong need to understand the weak in order to enable the weak to gain strength. The weak need to protect themselves from being discouraged by the strong, while they gain strength. I think this can be a key to all of us "getting along."
I've been considering a message board for lurkers or shy people where they might feel safe to begin to express themselves. If you would be interested in a private or public board like this, please write me e-mail. Meanwhile, I hope the links below will enrich you all.

INTRODUCING TERRI AND DAVID SCHANZ
farley@ourplace.cnchost.com
I really didn't choose MT; it chose me. I went to Michigan State University and studied to be a speech pathologist with courses in anatomy and physiology. I dropped out in 1972 because I ran out of money. David and I were newly married when we moved to Saginaw, Michigan. He went to work in a factory and I went to work at a local hospital as a unit secretary. There was a four-week training program in medical terminology and other specifics. Over two years' time, I worked for every service except OR. I was promoted to secretary in the nursing office where I scheduled 400 nurses for 13 units in a 326-bed acute-care hospital.
I left to have our first son. After he was born, I went back to work part time in the ER, and within a year, I was promoted to secretary to the vice president of nursing. I maintained policy and procedure manuals for JCAHO accreditation, professional licensure records for the nursing staff, and did other clerical duties for nursing administration.
I stayed there until our second son was born in 1980. Then I went back to work part time again as a unit secretary in the ER. When he was a year old, I quit work to stay home for while. The budget was very tight, and after a few months I started doing home day-care, and returned to work at the hospital when he was 4. I worked for the business office registering ER patients, coding ER charts and billing Blue Cross for ER physicians' fees on the 3-11 shift. My oldest son had started school and 3-11 didn't really work very well, so I started looking for another job.
I applied at a psychological clinic to do billing and accounts payable. I took a transcription test during the interview process as well. I had never used a transcriber before, but I passed the test and was hired. I did all the insurance billing, A/R, A/P and payroll, as well as overflow transcription of psychological evaluations. I left that job when my husband changed jobs and we moved.
Shortly after that our third was born Then my husband's company went bankrupt., so I had to go back to work. I found a job as a medical secretary for a new outpatient brain injury rehabilitation clinic. I did everything including transcription of lengthy monthly reports on each patient. We moved back to Saginaw but I kept that job for two years, commuting every day, until I decided to quit and stay home with my youngest son who was then two years old.
I stayed home for three years, and then I worked for a medical case management company as a secretary doing transcription among other things, and then in an inpatient rehabilitation unit as an adminstrative assistant where transcription was also part of my job. The brain injury rehab clinic I had worked for previously opened a clinic in my town, and I was rehired. I did intake, transcription, insurance billing, purchasing, and scheduling. We went through an arduous process to obtain CORF certification. But then the company experienced financial difficulties and this clinic closed after 16 months.
I then went to work for a durable medical equipment company where I did insurance authorization and billing. Then I helped start up an outpatient PT clinic as office manager. I started out in an empty building with a card table and a phone. As the business grew, we hired other clerical staff and outsourced our transcription. After two years I was supervising a staff of seven and had assisted in opening two more clinics in nearby towns. Then the owner brought in an adminstrator to oversee the support staff in all three clinics and told me I would not be allowed to apply for that job. He never would explain his reasons for that to me, but we had the best collection record and and lowest claim rejection rate of any of the other 53 affiliated clinics throughout the nation.
During this time, I also did transcription for a friend of mine who was a speech pathologist in private practice. I had done quite a bit of transcription although it was always only part of my job, and it was the first thing that was given to someone else when we got busy, as I was responsible for the billing. In July 1994 David lost his job as personnel director for an aerospace manufacturer due to the plant closing. He began doing my speech transcription during the day while I worked, and I proofread it over at night. By December of 1994 he had not found a job and unemployment was running out.
David had the idea of doing medical transcription for physicians from home. He made up some brochures and we sent them out. We got a response right away. We started our first client on January 3, 1995. He typed during the day, I proofed at night, and we delivered the next day. Over the next few months we added a few more clients. By March we hired a part-time employee to help with the transcription. I still worked full time and proofread everything at night; it made for some very long days. In May we got offered a large account. We would either have to hire more help or I would have to work full time.
I was about to be transferred to a new clinic opening up in a nearby city. We had enough money saved to cover my salary for two months, so we decided I would quit my job, come full time into the business, and market our service until we had replaced my income. The phone started to ring and by August we hired three part-time employees.
We now have about 50 clients, and through attrition, we have transitioned from employees in our home office to using all subcontractors. We have 10 of them now. We do office notes, correspondence, and clinics. We tried to fill a niche that wasn't being filled by other services. Big services don't really want to bother with a single practitioner who dictates maybe 300 lines a day, and we have an advantage over a single MT working alone, because we can offer more dependable service, since we always have someone working. Our clients tell us our quality is excellent.
Working at home was never our intent. We just needed to make some money and we couldn't afford office space. But now we don't want to go to an office everyday, even if it's ours. My husband still transcribes and proofreads, and he is also our resident techie and keeps the computers working. His personnel background is also invaluable. I only transcribe for one client regularly now, just to keep my fingers in it and fill in with others to cover when our MTs are off. I also do all the bookkeeping and billing for the business, assign the work, proofread, print, market, do QA, and help our MTs with research. Our sons, now 23, 20, and 14, work for us doing pickups and deliveries, which now take 5 hours and 140 miles a day to complete. We're still using tapes, but are converting to digital in the near future so we can expand our market and recruit MTs from a wider area.
We've been online since before the Internet, first joining bulletin board services in the early 80s that allowed us to message with people all over the world. My husband has always been interested in computers and we got our first one in the early 80s, an Odyssey that we hooked up to our TV, then a TI 99 4A, and then DOS.
I came to this business kicking and screaming. For a long time I missed working in an office and dressing up everyday. I figured in a year or so we'd have to get jobs and our lives would go back to normal. But we've done better than either of us ever could have imagined and our business has grown just by word of mouth for five years. And I really like my boss a lot!

ONE YEAR ON MT DAILY; MANY YEARS TO COME!
from Pandora, aka PandaBear
prgbear1@aol.com
http://www.mtdaily.com/mentors/pandora
First of all, working at home can be very isolating, as most of you know. MT Daily has given us an outlet to express our worries and fears, and most of all, our humor. It's almost better than working in an office full of co-workers, because your "co-workers" are there when you need them, but when you're busy and just can't be interrupted, MT Daily doesn't pop up at your desk wanting you to go to lunch or help referee a disagreement, etc.
I have made many very special friends on MT Daily, some of whom I communicate with on a personal level nearly every day. I even hope to meet a few in person very soon! I have seen many people post on MT Daily with personal problems, fears, anxieties, questions, and have subsequently seen wonderful, enlightening responses which often is a wealth of information for us all. Along with these responses, I see recipes, hints, household suggestions - what a great networking tool, both on a business and a personal level.
There are days when I spend too much time on MT Daily, and I'm sure most of you can relate. But it's a source of comfort for me to get on the boards and see my friends posting their thoughts, some wild experience they had that day, or what wonderful things their children are doing. I have seen the same source of comfort for those who have lost loved ones or pets, or who are going through very difficult times in their lives and need others to turn to for advice or consolation, perhaps when they don't feel they can turn to anyone else. I tell every MT I know about this website!
Lastly, I would like to say to all of you that you have personally touched my life in one way or another, and I'm so glad to have met you all. I hope we are all able to stay in touch for years and years to come!
