SIMULATED STRIKE
We'll be moving to a garage apartment this weekend, the first one we looked at. The owner of the home has a home business too; she's an Internet service provider! She has a "server farm" in a closet off of her living room. We'll have an ethernet connection to a T1 in that closet. Like moving to the banks of a cyber-river, methinks!
Have a good weekend!

Introducing Patricia I. Mowder, CMT (a.k.a. 007)
rene2pi@mwonline.net
Making the circuit of various jobs, always leaving for better benefits or better pay, I received experience as a clerk typist, Flexowriter operator, Teletype operator, switchboard operator, insurance biller, accounts payable, accounts receivable, medical secretary, medical transcriptionist and independent contractor. Credit belongs to God who has given me my abilities and talents for allowing me to get paid for doing something I love. I especially love doing ORs.
I had started at the hospital as an MT in medical records as a full-time employee in 1977. The Peoria Chapter of AAMT paid for me to take the certification test in 1987 which I passed on the first try. Later I was secretary of our chapter for about a year. In 1988 a cardiology group needed temporary help and allowed me to work at home as an IC. I picked up a few other accounts, and as the work flooded in, I had so much work that I quit my position at the hospital in 1988. Then in 1990 my accounts all dried up and I went back to the hospital. Business started picking up again, so I went to four 10-hour days at the hospital and worked the rest of the time at home. My daughter moved back from out of state in 1998 and was offered an IC position at the hospital where I work if I would mentor her. We accepted and she has done wonderfully since.
Three weeks ago out of the blue came the lightning bolt. My hospital employer of 23 years and our ICs got outsourced to a national company. Now we are taking it one day at a time. Could it be time for a career change? We have learned lots about computers, running our own business, time management, filing tax returns, etc. I believe there will be something for us to do somewhere and our talents will be appreciated. Life does indeed go on.
I like hanging out on the boards of MT Daily and helping mentor others. It keeps my gray cells stimulated and I still learn something new every day!

*******************************************************************
I love my job! Back in 1991 I worked as a registrar for a radiology group for six months before moving to the MT position. My background in nursing, a number of other experiences, and my strong work ethic was enough for my boss to agree that I could do the job even though I had never worked as an MT before. I worked as the sole transcriptionist for them as well as three satellite offices, and in the interim did fill-in work for other offices, mainly urology. Transcribing radiology was a great starting point for me. It was easy to expand from there, as there is a radiological procedure for nearly every part of the human body!
After the birth of my son in 1995 I chose not to return to work outside of my home. My husband was very supportive of my decision even though I didn't have a home job lined up. In the fourth week of my maternity leave I received a call from the urology practice for whom I had been doing fill-in work over the previous year. They needed me again, only this time they were looking for fulltime. One month later I received a call from an internist I knew who frequented the radiology facility. At that point I was transcribing for four physicians and two nurse practitioners while my son was asleep for naps and at night.
In April 1998 I placed a help wanted ad for an MT to work from home part-time as I was becoming overwhelmed. In the following week I received 105 resumes from women hoping for the opportunity to work from home. All but three had no experience. I was so discouraged. I didn't have time at that point to train anyone. Still, I placed calls to several applicants to no avail, and that was the day "Absolute Experience In Medical Transcription" was born. I spent the next two years developing this collection of 12 audio cassettes of physician dictations that MTs can use to get the experience they need to find a job. After all, that's what it's all about: Experience. The tapes were recorded by physicians in their clinical setting. I believe that in the process of becoming an MT a solid foundation is needed, but concentrated experience is the key to success!
Currently I'm transcribing fulltime from home for eight physicians and four nurse practitioners and still loving it! I've mentored other MTs in the past, and I'm currently mentoring my friend and neighbor Jackie who I'd like to complement by saying she is doing a terrific job! My son is http://www.mtdaily.com/mentors/whatsnew including real-time radiation therapy, docosanol, nesiritide, Gynazole-1, low-energy cool-beam cataract surgery, Aria graft,Lifestream home cholesterol monitor, Isomed constant-flow infusion system, Colazal, Canavan disease, Provir, Mammex TR mammography, OraSolv, PakSolv, DuraSov, OraVescent, C-bloc, NC-stat monitor, Photogenica V-Star laser, Rotograph Plus, Steri-Neb nebulizer, Ternamian Endo-TIP, FastPack, and more.
