BIO OF TALON WINDWALKER, MT, LVN, NATUROPATH
talon@talononline.com
http://www.talononline.com

After graduating from LVN school, I got a job working in a trauma department. Shortly after that they decided to only have RNs. I had just finished LVN training and boards and didn't want to go through that again, so I went to pediatrics, but I hated it. I had two patients: one with cancer and the other terminal. I couldn't handle that. So I went into geriatrics. Yuck there again. I decided to be a minister and while I was going to seminary I got a job working in a physician's office. While there, he noticed how fast I could type and started me out in transcription. In the meantime, I moved and the local hospital had an opening for a transcriptionist. Thinking I would have no problem since I was an LVN and had been transcribing SOAP notes, I went for the job. Lucky for me they hired me in spite of it all. In addition to learning acute care dictation and radiology, I was training on doctors from India. I remember being so frustrated that I just started crying. (I do that when I'm super frustrated.)

I graduated from seminary and, because of other things going on, felt disillusioned with organized religion and decided to not be a church-type minister. So, I enrolled in a school for naturopathy since I still wanted to do patient care but was a firm believer in natural medicine. My father's side of the family is Native American and my grandfather is part of the healing clan, so I had been raised with some of this belief. Meanwhile I stayed transcribing. I loved it. It was always a challenge, I was always learning new things and had to stay on top of so much information. I later transferred to the pathology dept. so I could broaden my knowledge. That was very interesting but didn't have near the variety.

Now I'm the radiology information systems manager for a regional hospital system in Washington State and also have responsibility for radiology transcription. I love technology but still really love transcription, so this job provided both for me. Thanks to some motivation from folks on the Physicians Board ( http://www.mtdaily.com/mentors/physicians), I started doing natural health consulting again along with acupressure, Healing Touch and Reiki. I started The Chrysalis Center and am hoping to be in a position to start doing that on a more part-time basis, hopefully eventually doing that full-time, in addition to the Physicians board ;-). I also formed Chrysalis Ministries which is a nondenominational, nonsectarian ministry devoted to healing and helping people through the transformation of body, mind, spirit, and soul. The ministry has grown rapidly all of a sudden, and we now have almost 20 ministers in the US, the UK, Ireland and Brazil.

I'm really thankful to the participants on the Physician Board who constantly encourage me and have such great questions. It helped rekindle a passion for me and helped give me the courage and motivation to go at it on a grander scale than ever before.

TGIF!

I hope you find some things of interest to you among the links below. Don't miss the link about international airline pilots having problems with English and the safety concerns it poses. English as a trade language is a topic I've been thinking about a lot this week, and I wonder how it is influencing medical records. From my perspective, quality is still king in our field, and computers still need people!

When the dictator is hard to understand, I am reassured of our job security. The three MTs I've been mentoring for a few months have mastered many details of editing and their ears are getting tuned, but when the learning is slow and I must point out more details, I am reassured of our job security again. When I get news of someone getting a better job or a new MT finding an intern position, I know it influences our expanding market for the good of MTs. There are lots of job listings on mtjobs.com this week, and lots of used equipment available on the ads page. Lots of humor on the boards, and lots of people helping people! Have a good weekend, and see you online!

NEW WIVES' TALES

Each week when Lora and I choose and gather MT Daily news and web resources, we are overwhelmed with the large community of people helping each other and the amount of useful information that is available to us. We are all like a think tank together with an enormous library. All of us are smarter than one of us, and we are all students in the ever-changing cyberschool of information!

We've overcome much ignorance and we no longer rely on old wives' tales (see http://members.aol.com/tireswing/tbcont.html), but now there is much more to know and much more we need to know, so we can feel even more ignorant! I hope these weekly listings of websites can be guides through the raw materials of the week and goads to personal enrichment (like new wives' tales). Unlike our computers, we are alive and doing processing no chip can do. We are needed and performing a valuable service, and we are watching out for each others' welfare.
