INTRODUCING TRISH MERRILL, MT CONSULTANT
OSOLOT98@AOL.COM
Moving on to an industrial clinic in Irvine, I did radiology transcription, first reports of injury and consultation letters. Moonlighting at an acute care hospital in the ER and medical records department opened my eyes to the real world of healthcare transcription. In those early years, I was fortunate to have worked in an environment where all of the transcriptionists worked closely together and production was not the primary focus. Quality was first, production second. Besides, we were all paid hourly, so no matter what we produced, we got paid for our time.
AAMT invited us to join and become certified under the grandfather clause. In contradiction to what many believe, we did have to take an examination as well as have letters of recommendation from physicians, mentors, supervisors and anyone else we could think of who could attest to our skills and knowledge. We all took advantage of the opportunity believing that with the support of that organization, we would be on our way to riches by becoming certified MTs. In hindsight, I really did become rich, but the richness was in the continuing of our education and in the friendships that developed through the years.
Leaving the hospital environment for independence, I operated a transcription service out of my home for some of the local physicians. I happened to be talking to my supervisor at the hospital about my plans when one of the orthopedists came into the department and overheard the conversation. He asked what I would be doing and I grinned at my boss and said, "I'm going to be a call girl." I quickly appended that with, "You know, the girl doctors call when they need their transcription done." He laughed and the name stuck and I became known as "The Call Girl" for five years with that orthopedic group as my first client.
After five years, I discovered that it was difficult to get qualified help and decided to move back into network transcription. I found a wonderful office in Riverside where I was afforded the opportunity to grow as an MT. >From developing an efficient QA team, I went on to a management position. The owner, who has become a dear friend and mentor, fell under the economic crises running rampant in California at the time and sold her business to a national group, becoming a branch manager herself. This led to further growth in my personal career, moving from national to national, merger by merger.
Over 28 years my career has run the gamut from small clinics to major hospitals, and from small service owner to branch manager for a national transcription service. During that time I have worked with nearly every digital system on the market, training both transcriptionist and physician/client in the operation of those systems both on-site and via phone support. BCB came into the picture about four years ago while I was doing beta testing for a national transcription service interested in using the remote re-record feature offered by BCB at that time. Part of my job involved assisting in the development of installation procedures for the system administrators at the various branch offices as well as training the transcriptionists who would be using the system in creating control files and basic maintenance and operation. This evolved into my participation with the BCB Tucson office on the training and support staff, and finally to my present situation.
For the past 10 months or so, I have been working with BCB Voice Systems, Inc., in client support and training. Recently, I've also become an authorized VoiceFLOW trainer, working independently. I currently work under the auspices of OSOLOT Consulting. OSOLOT provides services to clinics, transcription services and hospital administrators in the area of medical transcription, from the development of an offsite service to assisting in the research and decision making in the purchase of a digital system which best fits the client's situation.
After exploring several other MT boards and newsgroups, I found MT Daily to be the most welcoming environment for giving back to the community which has nurtured the growth of my personal career. OSOLOT is actively involved in the transcription community via the MT Daily boards as well as other organizations focused on the business of medical transcription.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
The history of Valentine's Day is obscure (see http://www.theherald.org/issues/021299/valhistory.f.html), but we all have memories of our own past Valentine's Days. Take some time to remember the good ones this weekend. My memories of Valentines Day are overshadowed by the birth of my third child on Valentine's Day, Eva B, an affectionate mother of four now, and still a romantic. Now it's time to make new memories on Valentine's Day, 2000!
I was given a new HPI MT Text Workbook and Key recently. I'll give it to the first MT student in need who writes me email at mary@mtdaily.com. Happy Valentine's Day!

ROUNDING UP UNEMPLOYED MTS
Here's my favorite story these days. It's especially for those facing overwhelming obstacles in life and work right now: A donkey fell in a deep well. The people had no way to get him out, so they began to shovel dirt to bury him so he wouldn't suffer so long. Instinctively the donkey shook the dirt off and stepped on it, and shook it off and stepped on it, and shook it off and stepped on it, until he was out!
