RESEARCHING THE FREE TRADE VS. FAIR TRADE ISSUE
It's a bewildering and overwhelming subject, but I'm trying to understand the reality of the situation and what I think would be good for Americans, democratic countries, and the rest of the world. Here are the questions I'm asking:
1. What kind of new power does the WTO have, with rich corporate
leaders?
2. Are nations losing power to international organizations?
3. What kind of power do multinational corporations have?
4. Are the poor workers in rich countries and the poor workers in
poor
countries hurting each other?
5. Should global organizations have members elected by member
countries?
6. Who should make decisions about the rules of world trade?
7. What will happen to democracy in the new world economy?
8. What will happen to jobs, working children, and the
environment?
Feel free to post your thoughts, questions, and other resources on the World Trade Board at http://www.mtdaily.com/mentors/trade. Here are some links on the WTO:

RUNNING SCARED
This week we've heard from "displaced MTs" who are feeling pushed around by the changes in how medical transcription is being done, having to learn yet another technology, adjust to yet another account, or start yet another job search. We've also met some people online who are feeling anxious because they are risking with innovations in our field, trying to educate and persuade us to better ways of doing things. We hear of companies being bought and sold, services being underbid and losing accounts, MTs who are intimidated by their companies, and new MTs struggling to find a start.
We are faced with the reality of international trade in medical transcription. We are faced with new competitors, but there is still a shortage of MTs and increasing dictation to assure us of job security. We ride the waves of healthcare and telecommunications, the Internet and a global economy.
Competition is scary, but we can network with competitors who can be allies; not all competitors are enemies. Some may give us new ideas and new technologies, and bring new strengths out of us. Here are some ideas on running scared and competing that I gathered together this week: http://www.mtdaily.com/mentors/world/messages/867.html
Here are a couple of questions that sometimes help me get running when I'm scared and it's hard to think of new ideas: If money and other means were not an issue, how could I improve my life and work? Is there any way to get the means needed to do it? Can I do it another way? We all need new ideas. In the links below, watch for a new marketing idea, a new MT technology, a new kind of credit card, and a new cure for blindness.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today to Doctors Without Borders ( http://www.dwb.org/), 2,500 international doctors. But they are also doctors with integrity and courage; they speak out against atrocities ( http://www.phillynews.com/inquirer/99/Oct/16/front_page/NOBEL16.htm). Courage is running toward your goals even though you are scared.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
One Christmas when we had very little money, I gave my husband a list of the things I wished I could have bought him for Christmas. I put the card in the tree, and it was his only gift that year, but he felt loved and understood.
There are six things I wish I could give to all MTs for Christmas if I could:
For Strength in Life:
1. A grateful heart.
2. A strong sense of responsibility.
3. Love for others.
For Success in MT Business:
1. Honesty so we can be trusted with words.
2. Logic so we can think with the dictators.
3. Passion for our meaningful work.
I recently watched the movie, "Paradise Road," based on a true story about a group of women thrown into a war camp in 1944. The suffering and abuse brought the worst and the best out of people; some adjusted and found ways to survive and others did not. New friendships were formed and new leaders emerged. They learned to sing together, and the music lifted them above their circumstances and empowered them to overcome. If you want to be inspired to make the most of life, rent this movie and watch it with some friends. And this Christmas, imagine the day when we will have the bandwidth to sing together on MT Daily! Until then, we can keep tapping on our keyboards and reading the words sent across the miles to each other.
We have a new grandbaby at our house, making it really feel like Christmas! "God bless us everyone!"
