HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!
by Scribus Medicus:
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and I was at home
I was scheduled on that night and my fingers were numb…
And I kept on thinking of how I’d like to be
Nestled up in my bed, and dreaming carefree.
Of sugarplums and fairies and all wonderful thoughts
Of the packages and parcels that Santa had brought.
But the workload was heavy that night I should add
And there would be no dreaming for me – it was bad.
I’d been working for hours, with hours yet to come
I just could not quit with so much left to be done
There was I, in my kerchief
And my husband snoring in his baseball cap
Where he’d fallen asleep on the couch,
With the remote in hand, for a nap
When up on the roof, there arose such a clatter
That I pulled off my headset and yelled,
“NOW what’s the matter?!?!?!”
Away to the window I flew, in a flash
Stubbing my toe, knocking over the trash
When what to my wondering eyes did appear
But a jolly old elf and eight tiny reindeer!
“Oh this is too much! I’ve been working too hard!”
I said to myself as I viewed my backyard
“This Santa’s for children, not adults fully grown”
And I was very sure at that point that my mind had gone.
“And what is your Christmas wish for yourself this year?”
The round old elf said as he offered a beer.
“Oh so sorry Santa,” I said. “I must get this done.”
“I’m sorry but tonight I’ve no time for fun.”
“You’re working on Christmas Eve? Why is this so?”
You’re supposed to be dreaming of Christmas, you know.”
“Oh Santa, I’d love to, but I’m an MT you see.
There are many people out there who are counting on me
To type these reports, get them out there on time.
I’m afraid those who are sick don’t get to choose their time-line.”
“I see,” said Santa, then he turned with a jerk
And unpacked his sack, and proceeded with his work.
He carefully laid presents under the tree.
And with a last thought I wondered what might be for me.
That’s the last I remember from that curious night.
As I woke up to see the morning sun’s light.
I checked into the mirror with a puzzled expression
My left cheek revealing an accurate keyboard impression
“Oh NO! This can’t be! I’ve fallen asleep!”
“I’ve slept through my shift!” and I started to weep.
When suddenly out of the corner of my eye
I spied a small package sitting way up high
On top of my monitor with a glistening bow
That was silver and complimented the blue wrapping paper below
“To Barbara, From Santa” was written on the top.
As I started to open it, the phone’s ringing made me stop.
“Hi Barb, this is Tonya”, the voice said on the phone.
It was my supervisor from work.
Oh no! What had I done!?!
“I’m calling to tell you what a great job you’ve done!
“All the work has been finished, reports typed every one!
I’m not sure how you did this, because from what I see
The amount that you finished would have taken 12 MTs.!
But you got it all done and I just had to call
To congratulate you and thank you for the good job and all.
Since there’s no more to do and you’re scheduled today
I hope you and your family enjoy the day.
“Merry Christmas!” she exclaimed and she hung up the phone
And at that point I guess you know MY mind was blown…….
I looked down at the package I still held in my hand
What had happened last night? I still didn’t understand.
I undid the bow and the wrapping right quick
To see what I’d gotten in this box from St. Nick.
Inside was a note written with the finest of hands.
As I read it I at once began to understand:
“On the night before Christmas, when I found you awake,
For Christmas this year I decided to make
A present for you and your family to enjoy
That could never be used up, forgotten, or destroyed.
I’ve done your reports and sent them all through
They’re proofread and corrected and credited to you.
So you need to not worry about your work today.
Enjoy your family and your Christmas Holiday!
