Introducing Maggie Denekas, CMT
mdenekas@ix.netcom.com
http://www.medlineschool.com
When I was a nursing student, I decided that I would never be a typist. I continually told myself this during a medical office management course I was required to take. To pass this course, I had to transcribe at 30 wpm from a tape recorder placed on a stool in the middle of the room. Near the end of the semester, with all assignments completed except for “typing out,” our instructor told us that once we “typed out” that we could go home. I spent the last week of the semester alone in that class, plunking out a mere 25-26 WPM. Feeling anxiety and frustration, I repeatedly told myself, “I’ll never be a typist.” Having been the first in my class in the clinical studies, I determined that administrative duties were not for me. Fortunately I did “type out,” and none too soon. I passed, graduated, and focused all my efforts on clinical employment.
For five years I worked in nursing and laboratory medicine, and dabbled in x-ray. Inevitably I was approached to help with transcribing accident reports and Workers' Compensation notes for my employers. This was not for extra pay; I had to find the time to squeeze them in. I forgot about my paltry typing speed because I was trying to please my employer. I didn’t have time to worry about my mindset of being genetically unable to type. My speed increased and my accuracy improved!
Then I went into hospital research. Again I was approached to transcribe. We used IBM typewriters at that time. The purchasing department probably wondered if I was eating correction ribbons! This time my employer, a very prominent physician, asked me to bring my finished transcription up to the surgical suite. I would change into scrubs and cover my hair and face with a mask to deliver my work! My employer would scold me in front of the staff and the sleeping patient on the table! Then I would march downstairs, determined to do better.
One day I was reviewing my old handwritten nursing notes, and chills came over me. I realized that I had poor spelling and grammar skills, but I also realized that the thing that got in my way was my negative thinking. With that self-evaluation, my skills improved, and my trips to the surgical suite brought less and less trouble for me. My next position was a medical office administrator. One of my duties was transcription. Then I worked for a transcription service for four years.
During this time, I met Toni Carlton. She was completing her MT training and began working for the company where I was working. My four children were young and I was able to type in the mornings, attend class parties and PTA meetings, and then type in the evening. It wasn’t always quiet, but I had a very flexible schedule.
In 1991, Toni and I opened Med-Line Transcription Services in Tomball, Texas, a small rural town in the NW Houston area. Transcription had been such a rewarding career for us, we wanted to create a company that would provide employment opportunities for many MTs. Toni and I set up shop in a little office with $200. We used tape machines and folding tables, and we sat on folding metal chairs for two years! In the beginning, we spent many nights at the office, taking time only to go home to shower and then return to the task.
A funny story to tell on ourselves: We obtained a large hospital account in the very early 90s. We would be typing op notes and discharges. Although Toni and I had typed operative reports, we didn’t have a surgery book. The question of the day was whether to run into the bookstore, or whether we could spare the expense of a surgical word book! Fortunately, we did buy the book, and it’s in tatters by now.
The company grew steadily, providing services to both hospitals and physicians throughout the Houston area. In 1998 our service was acquired by MedQuist. Toni and I continued to work in the office providing transcription and management services for one year after the merger. After a short summer Toni and I opened The Med-Line School of Medical Transcription. We had trained many MTs in our company through the years, and now we finished the curriculum started several years previously. We underwent scrutiny by state authorities, with many revisions and trials. Now our program has been proven successful in training students.
Toni functions as the administrator and handles the student records, finances, State and government requirements, and promotion of the program. I work with the students, and maintain our website and student newsletter. It has been very rewarding to see the students put forth 100% effort in the program.
We talk to many potential students who have legitimate fears in their earnest attempt to find a program that will give them their money’s worth and bring them into the field. Some remind me of myself when I felt I couldn’t type. New insight tells me that I learned to be a good follower, so I could be a good leader.
After all these years, while I have become an adequate typist, Toni far surpasses me in the WPM realm. We have different strengths. Perhaps because I did so well in the clinical aspect I was able to compensate for my slower typing speed, which has never been noticed or commented on!

Add your response to our survey on pay deductions for errors at http://www.mtdaily.com/surveys/pay/
I've heard it said that if you set a goal, you can still reach it even though you are off course 95% of the time, just like a pilot who must constantly correct his course. The best we can ever be as humans is quickly self-correcting. All of us are smarter than one of us!

INTRODUCING MT DAILY BOOKSTORE
http://www.mtdaily.com/bookstore
***********************************************************
Before she did transcription, she trained patients in the use of the TENS unit and worked with Doppler ultrasounds. She has done medical transcription for 22 years. As a widow, she went back to school when her son started college. Her son is now a third year medical student. She became a grandmother in July and she has a Black Labradore named Maggie. And she has a garage full of books!
We invite you to visit the new bookstore and compare the prices.
Thanks to Cheryl, Lora, and David for their help with this project. Write lora@mtdaily.com if you have any questions. -Mary Morken

IMPROVING MEDICAL RECORDS
NEW FREE ONLINE GMT STYLE GUIDE
http://medicaltrans.net/gmt-transcription-rules.html
Every good MT is a perennial student of medicine, and with the availability of the Internet we are now expected to research everything that is not yet in the books, just as spellcheckers have raised the expectation that we will spell everything perfectly. And peer-to-peer networking is enabling us to continue learning more efficiently.
As a contribution to the ongoing public education of MTs, especially those who have never taken an MT course, and for the sake of improving patient records, the GMT training program in Hawaii has agreed to make their style guide available online, and it is printable. Send your suggestions and feedback to Jeffrey at GMT. His email is posted with the guide at http://medicaltrans.net/gmt-transcription-rules.html. Of course, the list can be modified for your own use, but it does give us a public reference for those who have no written standards to follow. A lot of time can be wasted in hesitation, wondering, and second-guessing; pinning down rules can improve production.
